personality:
Feron’s occupation is that of an information trader, you know the kind of job that can make a guy look cool if he didn’t look like a walking Skittle. Originally, Feron fended for himself in the field, and did a pretty good job at it too. That got flip-turned upside-down whenthese couple of guys who were up to no good the Shadow Broker’s men contacted him. Now Feron made the choice to join up with them because the job paid good—the Broker had far more resources in his reach and could pay him a fair deal more than he could ever hope to make on his own. This worked well for awhile, until Feron’s morals (as minimal as they may seem to others) came into play. After all, a guy has to have some standards.
If he takes on a job he is sure to finish it, he won’t screw over his client for a higher pay once he’s accepted a contract. No matter what his client’s motives may be, he will finish the jobs given if they are part of the contract he agreed to. The acception to this is with the Broker due to his dealings with Collectors being one of the few things Feron could not stand, condone, or assist in—he’s an information trader, not a slaver. The trade of living beings or bodies is something he does not deal in. He has been known to walk or refuse a job on these conditions, though the Broker presented an extreme case that made Feron willing to take action to stop the trade from happening.
Feron has also shown to be a smart ass, mostly in times of stress (most likely to lighten the mood or to make himself feel better). An example of this is in the Broker’s base when he is strapped to an electrical torture device—he makes a remark about not trying to go anywhere even though it is very clear he could do anything but move from his location.
He is also exceptionally good at that whole lying thing—working as an information trader makes that skill rather necessary for survival. He will lie when it’s needed without another thought, it’s just second nature to him. However, this habit and defense mechanism can throw people off and has, in the past, made others wary of trusting them when they do catch on to his lies. He tries to limit the habit to when it is necessary, and he prefers not to keep those he works with out of the dark (for the most part). For those he trusts (I hesitate to say friends) he makes a conscious effort to be honest, though for their sake or his he will still find himself lying as a safe guard in some situations. He did this to Liara on several occasions, though he eventually informed her that he had lied…later on…got hit for it too.
When it comes to conflicts and fights, Feron often tries to get out before there’s trouble. He’s not cowardly, but he’s developed a sense for trouble and if he can avoid it, he will. When he’s caught up in it though, he can use a gun and is able to fight with some decent amount of ability—though it is by far not his strongest point. Still he can hold his own and then some, and in times where a friend is in trouble he will put himself on the line so that they can escape.
Of course, there are issues that come up because he was tortured for two years. Despite all that he went through, Feron still comes off as (mostly) sane, though he will hesitate on talking about what happened. He won’t go into much detail if any when it does come up, but it is rather obvious that the ordeal had an effect on him. He will claim that he is fine, or will be, and generally tries to down play the events of those two years as much as he can. If anything he is still trying to work it out on his own before burdening others with his issues.
abilities/powers: Being a drell, Feron possesses a drell’s perfect memory. This means that Feron is capable of recalling events with perfect clarity and can, if he so chooses, escape into his old memories—when recalled these can be as real as actual reality for drell. Basically, they can relive their memories. This ability is not always voluntarily invoked and can be triggered by the environment/situation/emotion/etc.
Drell skin has been known to excrete a substance that can produce hallucinogenic effects if it is ingested by some non-drell species. Humans have also been known to get rashes from prolonged skin contact with drells. Thank you Mordin for being sometimes disturbingly knowledgeable.
Another trait unique to the drell, but not so cool as them basically being Hypnotoad, is their sensitivity to high levels of humidity. Originating from what was pretty much a desert planet, drells never adapted to humid environments, and prolonged exposure can lead to erosion of their lungs' ability to take in oxygen (which can spread to other organs). This erosion of oxygen intake is known as Kepral's Syndrome--it is non-communicable and there is currently no cure.
As an information trader, Feron has skills in obtaining informations that others either have no knowledge of, or that they are otherwise unable to obtain by their own means. He also tries to be a smooth talker—which really…doesn’t work a fair majority of the time, but he tries.
It should be noted that he’s shown some skill as a pilot. Not sure how that may come in handy, but it is part of the skill set.
first person sample:
Really the morgue doesn’t surprise me…Could have sworn I was getting better, but the Broker really turned up the heat at the end. [A rumbling voice comes over the system, laced with a dulcet tone and sounding a bit too amused for the situation.] I didn’t think anyone would bother bringing someone like me back though, wasn’t that saved for the galaxy’s hero?
…I won’t assume there’s anyone listening to this that would actually care to clue me in, but it’d be appreciated. Anyone know what system we’re in for starters?
Really any kind of information would be good to get at this point. Clothes would be even better.
third person sample:
It was hopeless. It had been nearly two years, and Feron had only just come to that breaking point. Two years filled with endless screams and pain he would never wish to describe to anyone. He’s pretty sure his skin is still tingling from the last jolt, just barely standing on this side of being seared and burned.
Truth be told, he’s almost surprised he’s lasted this long. He knows the Broker’s techniques have shattered lesser men. And while he had his memories to escape to, he also had his memories to haunt him and make him feel every little shock again and again. Still, he’s damn close to breaking, and he knows when the Broker comes again it may be the last time before he’s shipped off in little more than some shitty shipping container where he’ll be left to rot. It’s a morbid realization, but hey he stopped dreaming about escape awhile ago.
And speak of the goddamn devil—or some of his minions; those steps were far too light to be the shadowy beast he’s seen through the glass. He doesn’t bother to shift from his position slumped in the chair—it wouldn’t matter anyway once they started playing with the damn settings anyway. What he wasn’t prepared for was a familiar voice calling his name. He shifted, blinking wearily as looked toward the direction the voice came from.
“Liara?” Disbelief was clear in his voice. Damn, guess he could scrounge up a bit of hope and hold out a little longer. Trust her and that Commander Shepard to suddenly turn what seemed like a hopeless situation around at the last second.
